Autodesk FBX Review: Features, Workflow, and File Compatibility

Overview

Autodesk FBX Review is a lightweight, cross-platform (Windows, macOS) standalone viewer for inspecting 3D models and animations without a full 3D authoring tool. It’s designed for quick asset review and iteration with a focus on visual fidelity close to Autodesk Viewport 2.0.

Key features

  • Fast 3D preview: Open and view models and animation takes quickly.
  • Visual modes: Toggle wireframe, shaded, textured, and lighting views.
  • Animation controls: Play, pause, and scrub through animation takes; switch cameras saved in the file.
  • Basic scene controls: Orbit, pan, zoom, and simple camera navigation.
  • Format support: Opens .fbx and several other common 3D formats (examples: .zip, .abc, .3ds, .obj, .dxf, .dae, .bvh, .htr, .trc, .asf, .amc, .c3d). Support and reliability for non-FBX formats can vary by version.
  • Lightweight & free: Small install footprint; intended as a quick review tool rather than a content-creation app.

Typical workflow

  1. Export or collect the asset (FBX recommended) from your authoring tool (Maya, 3ds Max, Blender export via FBX).
  2. Open the file in FBX Review (or a .zip containing the file).
  3. Use camera/navigation
